چکیده

Wheelchairs are the primary mobility device for individuals having difficulty with ambulatory activities [1]. In the U.S. it is estimated that 3.3 million people used a wheelchair in 2010 [2], of which 90% used manual wheelchairs (MWs) [3]. However, MWs often lead to reduced independent function and quality of life [4]. Furthermore, shoulder pain and injuries are commonly associated with MW propulsion [5]. Geared manual wheelchairs (GMWs) may be a promising alternative that reduces the biomechanical demands of the shoulder needed for MW propulsion while maximizing function. However, there is limited scientific evidence supporting the benefits of GMW mobility. The purpose of this study is to compare the glenohumeral (GH) joint dynamics and shoulder flexors electromyography (EMG) during geared and standard MW propulsion. It is hypothesized that using GMWs will decrease glenohumeral joint range of motion and shoulder muscle activity.

Development of an OpenSim shoulder model for manual wheelchair users with tetraplegia

INTRODUCTION Extended manual wheelchair use has been associated with repetitive strain injuries in the shoulder and has been identified as a contributing factor to upper limb pain experienced by manual wheelchair users with spinal cord injury (SCI) [1]. Due to the nature of their SCI, individuals with tetraplegia (formerly quadriplegia) may be at an even greater risk for developing shoulder inj...

Linking Wheelchair Kinetics to G lenohumeral Joint D

The aim of the study was to investigate if pushrim kinetics could be used as markers of glenohumeral joint demand during manual wheelchair accessibility activities; demonstrating a method of biomechanical analysis that could be used away from the laboratory. Propulsion forces, trunk and upper limb kinematics and surface electromyography were recorded during four propulsion tasks (level, 2.5% cr...

Biomechanics of Pediatric Manual Wheelchair Mobility

Currently, there is limited research of the biomechanics of pediatric manual wheelchair mobility. Specifically, the biomechanics of functional tasks and their relationship to joint pain and health is not well understood. To contribute to this knowledge gap, a quantitative rehabilitation approach was applied for characterizing upper extremity biomechanics of manual wheelchair mobility in childre...

A theoretical analysis of the influence of wheelchair seat position on upper extremity demand.

BACKGROUND The high physical demands placed on the upper extremity during manual wheelchair propulsion can lead to pain and overuse injuries that further reduce user independence and quality of life. Seat position is an adjustable parameter that can influence the mechanical loads placed on the upper extremity. The purpose of this study was to use a musculoskeletal model and forward dynamics sim...

Compensatory strategies during manual wheelchair propulsion in response to weakness in individual muscle groups: A simulation study.

BACKGROUND The considerable physical demand placed on the upper extremity during manual wheelchair propulsion is distributed among individual muscles. The strategy used to distribute the workload is likely influenced by the relative force-generating capacities of individual muscles, and some strategies may be associated with a higher injury risk than others. The objective of this study was to u...
